The Musical Instrument Museum Exhibitions
The Musical Instrument Museum is located in Phoenix, Arizona. Opened in April 2010, it is the largest museum of its type in the world. The collection of over 15,000 musical instruments and associated objects includes examples from nearly 200 countries and territories.
My task as Founding Design Manager was to create the fundamental aesthetic for the museum’s 80,000 square feet of exhibition spaces and interior environments before the space opened.
The role involved creating clarity, continuity, and emotional resonance throughout the museum, translating curatorial vision into a unified spatial and graphic identity. This resulted in shaping typography, materials, environmental graphics, and exhibit presentation systems. Working across departments from early concept development to execution planning to make sure that design promoted engagement, wayfinding, and storytelling.
